You need to click 'Add new' banner zone then insert the new zone into header.php.
Or, you can open header.php and add your banner directly into the header.php file.

can you please tell me what you did?
i am trying to place a jpg file on the left side of the page alongside the categories.
I created a new ad in ad manager and gave the path /templates/images/image1.jpg
after that DO I need to edit the header.tpl file?
