Google vows quicker pounce on copyright pirates

SAN FRANCISCO – Google is promising to do a better job of weeding out copyright violations on the Internet.

As part of a crackdown announced Thursday, Google Inc. says it will respond to complaints about pirated material posted on its YouTube video site and other services within 24 hours. It's an attempt to placate copyright holders upset about lengthy delays in the removal of videos or other content that had been posted illegally.

Google also plans to police the websites in its online advertising network more closely. Sites that repeatedly try to make money by improperly hosting copyright content will be banned from the Internet's largest ad network more quickly.

Publishers, broadcaster and movie studios contend rampant copyright abuses on the Internet have cost them hundreds of millions of over the past decade.
